Smiths Beach proposal

14 December 2006

Suellen Gerrard, The West Australian

The latest plans for the controversial Smiths Beach development in the South-West should be made public by April after the Busselton Shire Council last night voted to release the project for comment.

Canal Rocks Pty Ltd’s latest proposal for the 40ha site south of Yallingup includes two hotels, 263 tourist units, 104 dwellings, a 60-bed backpackers hostel and 1700sqm of commercial floor space.

Canal Rocks’ town planning consultant Michael Swift said the project had been subject to different processes and standards to others in the shire.

Councillors Anne Ryan and John Triplett both disqualified themselves from voting after a Corruption and Crime Commission inquiry found that Canal Rocks had secretly channelled funds into their election campaigns.
