Letter in response to observed media manipulation

05 October 2005

by Luke Sutherland, President, Yallingup Boardriders Association

When Canal Rocks Pty Ltd held a workshop for the surfing community in Dunsborough recently, local surfing representatives were invited to participate in a discussion regarding clubrooms and surf life saving facilities on the proposed "Smiths Point" development. We were not there to discuss the actual development guide plan. The Smiths Beach Action Group, as community representatives, is responsible for this task.

The Yallingup Boardriders Association fully supports the Smiths Beach Action Group. We also hold concerns regarding the size and integrity of the new Smiths Point proposal and the impact on a popular local beach.

The article published in last Tuesdays West Australian (22/9/05 "Surfers back Smiths Beach plan") was false and misleading. What the Surfers are interested in are the proposed community facilities to be set aside as part of Location 413.

The article was used as part of the manipulative marketing campaign employed by Canal Rocks Pty Ltd. In their attempt to make it appear that the community is on board with their new proposal, Canal Rocks Pty Ltd, are succeeding in doing the exact opposite.

Yours sincerely,

Luke Sutherland

President Yallingup Boardriders Association
