Way forward to be determined with the community

12 April 2003

Smiths Beach Action Group, Press Statement |1|2|

The Smiths Beach Action Group attended a presentation for the Busselton Shire Council on the 9th April 2003 by the Smiths Beach developers.

The Action Group is generally encouraged by the new approach by the developers to seek community views on a new development at Smiths Beach.

The Action Group has given its endorsement to a process of informal discussions on a regular basis with the developers to determine a way forward with regard to any further development at Smiths Beach.

We are however in disagreement with the developers over their opposition to the Shire amending its Town Planning Scheme to reflect the intent of the changes to the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge Statement of Planning Policy, made recently by the Minister for Planning, Alannah MacTiernan.

We strongly support the recent council resolution to produce a report on an appropriate amendment to the Town Planning Scheme, which will reflect the amended Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge Statement of Planning Policy and believe the community has a strong expectation that the necessary changes to the Scheme will be made by Council soon.

We believe that once the Town Planning Scheme has been modified to be in line with the amended SPP, the Council, the community and the developers will have a clear understanding of the guidelines for an acceptable level of development at Smiths Beach.

The Smiths Beach Action Group has received strong support from local community groups for their stance on the changes to the Town Planning Scheme.

Bob McKay Chairman, Smiths Beach Action Group.
